Planning A Metal Building Questions to Ask Yourself

Before you finalize the design of your new metal building, take a few minutes to think through how you’ll use it – both now and in the future. Asking the right questions up front will help you avoid common mistakes and make sure you get a building you’ll love for years. A little planning now can save you from costly modifications later and ensure your investment meets your needs perfectly from day one.

How Will I Use This Building?

Decide whether your building is for parking, storage, a workshop, a barn, or even a living space. The main use determines the size, layout, and features you need. For example, a workshop needs electrical outlets and lighting, while a barn for sheltering livestock requires ventilation and stall space. Understanding your primary purpose helps you prioritize which features are essential versus nice-to-have.

How Many Vehicles or Items Am I Protecting?

Measure everything you plan to store – vehicles, tractors, ATVs, boats, or equipment – and add extra room for maneuvering, doors, and future purchases. Don’t forget to take note of your largest items and account for clearance space around them. You’ll need room to walk around vehicles, open doors fully, and move equipment in and out comfortably. Don’t forget to consider height requirements, especially for lifted trucks, RVs, or boats on trailers.

Where Is the Best Location on My Property?

Choose a spot with good drainage, easy access, and enough clearance for doors. Think about how it looks from the road and whether you want it close to your home or business. Poor drainage can lead to water pooling around your building or even inside it, so look for naturally elevated ground or plan for proper grading. Consider the path you’ll take when moving items in and out – will delivery trucks or trailers be able to access the site easily? Also think about utilities if you’ll need power or water, and check local requirements that dictate how close you can build to property lines, roads, or other structures. Walk to the spot where you want your building, and imagine using it day to day. Think about door placement, driveway access, and sunlight. A quick walk-through now can save headaches later.

Do I Need Room to Grow?

If there is a chance you need more space later, consider going slightly bigger now or leaving room for lean-tos or add-ons in the future. Expanding a building after installation typically costs more per square foot than building larger initially. Think about your five or ten-year plans – will your family grow, will your business expand, or might you acquire more equipment or vehicles? Even if you can’t afford your ideal size right now, positioning your building with expansion in mind means you won’t box yourself in later. Leaving space on one or both sides for future lean-tos gives you flexibility without requiring a completely new structure.

What Features Matter Most?

Decide if you need insulation, windows, roll-up doors, or decorative options. Think about aesthetics – do you want your building to match your house, barn, or business? Insulation may be an important addition if you will be working or storing items in extreme temperatures. Windows provide natural light and ventilation, and can reduce electricity costs. Consider your color options for the roof, siding, trim, or wainscot. Do they compliment the aesthetics of your home or business, or make a statement of their own? Don’t overlook practical features like additional walk-in doors for ease of access.

What Is My Budget?

Set a realistic budget and decide if you’ll use financing or Rent-to-Own. Knowing your price range helps your project specialist recommend the right options. Remember that your budget should account not just for the building itself, but also for site preparation, any necessary permits, and optional features or upgrades you want. Having a clear budget from the start allows you to make informed decisions about size and features of your structure.
