The twice-a-year walk-around, the four seasonal jobs, and the long-term care that keeps the warranty intact.
Every Six Months
Walk around your building twice a year and inspect the following.
Foundation & Drainage
- Ensure the ground slopes away from the foundation
- Check for cracks or settling in concrete slabs
- Remove any standing water near the base of the building
Hardware & Openings
- Tighten any loose screws or bolts
- Lubricate moving parts like roll-up doors and hinges
- Make sure windows, doors, and seals are functioning properly
Surrounding Area
- Keep vegetation trimmed away from the sides of the building
Inspections & Warranty
- Schedule a professional inspection every few years if using your building for business
- Review your warranty to stay current on coverage requirements
Season by Season
- Spring
- Clear away leaves or debris from around the foundation. Make sure gutters or downspouts are free of clogs.
- Summer
- Inspect for fading paint or UV wear and consider a touch-up.
- Fall
- Remove leaves from the roof and check for gaps that might let in pests.
- Winter
- After heavy snow, safely clear the roof to prevent excess weight, especially on non-vertical roofs.
Long-term Care
- Clean the exterior. Rinse dirt, pollen, and debris from panels and roof using a garden hose or gentle pressure-washer setting.
- Inspect panels and trim. Look for dents, scratches, or loose fasteners and address them promptly.
- Check for rust. Touch up paint chips or scratches immediately to prevent corrosion.
After a storm. Buildings should be physically inspected at least twice a year, and again immediately after severe weather, to check for dents, holes, or other damage that could compromise the structural steel panels.
Watch: Building Maintenance, Part I
Steel buildings are celebrated for their durability and low maintenance, but custom metal buildings still need routine care to preserve appearance and performance. Inspect at least twice a year, and again immediately after severe weather.
