Metal Building Buyer’s Guide

Everything you need to plan the perfect steel building, from size and style to site preparation.

Why Choose Steel

Versatility

Works for carports, garages, barns, workshops, commercial buildings, homes, and more. Easy to expand or upgrade later, with dozens of customization options.

Durability

Steel resists pests, termites, rot, and warping. Designed to withstand high winds, heavy snow, and tough weather conditions, backed by manufacturer warranties.

Affordability

Pre-engineered components mean faster construction and lower labor costs, with minimal waste compared to traditional methods.

Low Maintenance

Requires only simple cleaning and seasonal inspections. Protective coatings prevent rust and fading.

Longevity

With proper care, your structure can last 40 to 50+ years, holding value and enhancing property resale.

The Bottom Line

Metal buildings are stronger, more affordable, and more flexible than traditional construction.

Selecting a Style

Carports
Budget-friendly option for vehicle and equipment protection.
Garages
Fully enclosed for maximum security, weather protection, and storage.
Barns
Traditional layouts with flexible storage for agriculture, livestock, or multi-use spaces.
Workshops
Great for hobbies, small businesses, or home-based projects that need dedicated space.
Commercial
Clear-span designs for retail, offices, or warehouse space.
Barndominiums
A modern mix of living space and utility under one roof: durable, affordable, and stylish.
Industrial
Heavy-duty structures built for factories, large-scale operations, or equipment storage.

Style tip. Choose a style that fits how you’ll use your building today and tomorrow. It is much easier to enclose a carport or expand a barn later if you plan for it now.

Choosing Your Foundation

Most popular

Concrete Slab

The strongest and most durable option. It prevents shifting, is easy to clean, and works best for garages, workshops, and commercial buildings.

Gravel

Affordable with excellent drainage. Works well for carports, RV covers, and small storage. Must be properly compacted and level before installation.

Asphalt Pad

Smooth and stable, a good option for carports or small garages. More budget-friendly than concrete, but not as durable for heavy use.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. How will I use this building? Decide whether it’s for parking, storage, a workshop, a barn, or living space.
  2. How many vehicles or items am I protecting? Count everything you plan to store and add extra room for maneuvering, doors, and future purchases.
  3. Where is the best location on my property? Choose a spot with good drainage, easy access, and enough clearance for doors.
  4. Do I need room to grow? Consider going slightly bigger now or leaving room for lean-tos and add-ons later.
  5. What features matter most? Decide on insulation, windows, roll-up doors, or color matching.
  6. What is my budget? Set a budget and explore financing or rent-to-own.

Walk-through tip. Walk to the spot where you want your building and imagine using it day to day. Think about door placement, driveway access, and sunlight.

Questions to Ask Your Specialist

  1. What size and layout do you recommend?
  2. Do I need a permit? Check local wind and snow ratings, and ask if engineered drawings are provided.
  3. What foundation is best for my site?
  4. What customization options are available?
  5. What is the timeline for delivery and installation?
  6. What financing or promotions can I use?

Tip. Provide measurements, photos, or sketches of your property and the items you plan to store.
