How Installation Works, What to Expect on Installation Day

So you’ve finalized all the details, completed the paperwork, paid your deposit and fabrication fee, and made it through the scheduling process. Now the day that you have been waiting for has finally arrived, installation day, and all you can think about is, “What happens when the crew arrives?”

Here’s a simple breakdown of what you can expect before, during, and after your metal building installation.

Step 1: Confirming Your Installation Date

Before the crew shows up, your manufacturer will reach out with your expected installation schedule. Typically the manufacturer will give the week in which the installation will take place. As your installation day gets closer, you will receive another call with more specific details, including your exact installation date, the crew’s expected arrival time, and any last-minute items that need to be handled before the crew arrives.

Confirming your installation date is important because it helps to make sure everyone is on the same page and also gives you some time to double-check that your site is ready, your building location is marked, and any required equipment or access needs are handled ahead of time.

Step 2: The Crew Arrives

On installation day, the crew will arrive with a truck and trailer loaded with the materials needed for your building. It’s very important that prior to the crew arriving at the site that you ensure that the truck and trailer can get in and out safely. It is also very important that prior to the crew’s arrival that the building location has been marked, utility lines have been identified, and that there is enough space around the installation site for the crew to begin working.

You may not need to be there for the entire installation, but it’s a good idea to be available at the beginning. The crew may have a question about placement or access, and being there early can help avoid confusion before the work begins.

Step 3: Site Verification & Material Staging

Before the crew begins construction, they will take a few minutes to look over the site and make sure the building placement is correct. They’ll check the layout, measurements, site conditions, and available clearance around the area, this is to make sure the building is going in the right spot and that the crew has enough room to work safely.

Once the site is confirmed, the crew will unload and organize the building components. This is called “staging”. Basically, staging just means they’re laying out the materials in a way that makes sense for the build. It also gives them a chance to make sure the materials they need are there before they start assembling the structure. Once everything is checked and staged, the crew can begin assembling your metal building.

Step 4: Building Assembly

The build starts with the base rails and anchors. From there, the crew will set the legs, framing pieces, and trusses. Once the frame is up, they’ll move on to the roof panels, wall panels, trim, doors, windows, and any other features included in your order. This could be considered the most exciting part of the day because you can actually see the building start to take shape.

Depending on the size and complexity of your project, your building may be installed in a day or two. A simple carport will usually move faster than a larger enclosed garage, barn, or commercial building. Of course, every project is a little different, weather, site conditions, access, building size, and custom features can all affect how long the installation takes.

Step 5: Final Walkthrough & Payment

Once the building is finished, the crew leader will usually do a final walkthrough with you. This is your chance to look over the completed structure and make sure everything looks right. You can check the building placement, doors, windows, panels, trim, and any other details that were included in your order.

If you have questions, ask them. If something doesn’t look right, say something before the crew leaves. The final walkthrough is there to make sure the building was installed as ordered and that you feel comfortable with the finished project. As mentioned at the time of your fabrication payment, once the walkthrough is complete, the remaining balance of your structure is due.

The Bottom Line

Installation day is the exciting final step of the building purchasing process. You’ve already designed your building, finalized the details, and waited through scheduling. Now the crew is coming to put it all together. The best thing you can do is make sure your site is prepared, marked, and easy to access before they arrive. When the site is ready, the crew can get to work faster, avoid unnecessary delays, and help you get one step closer to using your new metal building.
